ICE detention deaths reach 14 in FY2025 amid reports of medical neglect and overcrowding

| Importance: 9/10 | Status: confirmed

Fourteen people died in ICE custody by August 2025, with 11 deaths occurring since the start of the Trump administration. Nearly 90% of ICE detainees are held in facilities run by private companies GEO Group and CoreCivic. Reports documented widespread medical neglect, overcrowding, lack of food, and punitive solitary confinement. Despite deteriorating conditions and preventable deaths, the private companies announced adding 6,000+ beds and continued receiving full payment. Advocacy groups state the death count is “very likely an underestimate given ICE’s lack of transparency.”
